Four Mountains. Four Wines.

Established in 1995, Lokoya is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations. These single-vineyard wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered—resulting in the purest expression of place. They are powerful wines that reflect the intense individuality of each mountain.

The Name

Lokoya honors the Native American tribe of the Napa Valley who lived on Mount Veeder in the western mountains and named part of it “Lokoya” which, legend has it, means “the place where geese fly over.”

Winemaking

Winemaker Chris Carpenter believes that the art of great winemaking is knowing when to intervene in the vineyard and the cellar, and when to leave the fruit alone so that it can express itself as naturally and eloquently as possible. Winemaking nurtures the optimal expression of the fruit, pampering ideally ripe fruit with gentle handling at every turn. Extensive sorting, native yeast fermentation, small wooden basket pressing and aging in small French oak barrels coax what is irreplaceable about each vineyard.

Winemaking techniques include:

• Minimal movement of fruit from vineyard to cellar to avoid prematurely crushed berries.
• To ensure that only the most pristine, clean fruit is fermented, all of the grapes are hand-sorted at the winery using mobile sorting tables with a conveyer design.
• Small wooden basket pressing allows more control and better tannin management; level of pressing can be monitored and incremental press cuts can be made.
• Specially designed, semi-open top fermenters allow fruit to be picked at higher sugar levels without resulting in higher alcohol levels. This results in smoother, more elegant wines.
• Native yeast fermentations allow the wine to develop maximum complexity
• French oak barrels are used exclusively to frame the powerful tannins of the mountain fruit.
• Lokoya is lightly fined using egg whites, which removes sediment without stripping the wine.

The 36th Annual l’Eté du Vin to feature Chris Carpenter, 100-Point Winemaker

Chris Carpenter is the winemaker for some of Napa Valley’s most prestigious wineries, including Cardinale, Lokoya, La Jota and Mt. Brave. He has earned a reputation for taming Napa mountain tannins and creating legendary Cabernet Sauvignon. He believes in maximum attention in the vineyards and minimal intervention in the winery to create the purest expression of place.

Chris grew up outside Chicago and developed a thirst for knowledge. With an intellect geared for science and a physique built for athletics, he earned an undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Illinois, ChampaignUrbana, while playing big-ten football. Still curious, he went on to receive his MBA at the University of Illinois, Chicago while selling medical products and bartending at both an Irish pub and later a music club. The music club surrounded him with musicians and artists and together, they started exploring and discovering the great food and wine scene in Chicago.

During a visit to Napa Valley, Chris discovered a lifestyle that combined his love of the sciences with his growing passion for culinary and wine pursuits— a way to be challenged both intellectually and creatively. Soon after, he would start studying at UC Davis where he earned a master’s degree in both viticulture and enology. He further studied as a research-intern in Italy at Tenute Antinori, Santa Cristina Estate before landing in Napa Valley at the Cardinale Estate in 1998. In 2000, Chris was appointed winemaker for Lokoya and he went on to assume that role for Cardinale, La Jota, and Mt Brave— where he makes wines sourced from the mountains.

The passions that developed in his 20s and 30s continue to shape his personal life as well as his professional life. Chris and his wife founded the Napa Valley chapter of Slow Food and served as Chair for Slow Food USA, an organization dedicated to preserving regional foods and small food purveyors, and to celebrating local farmers and chefs. He is the President of the Napa Valley Youth Symphony, an avid concert goer, and he occasionally plays the trombone. And he continues his love affair with the restaurant business by bartending every Friday night at the Rutherford Grill where he “learns more about human nature and about life in general, behind the plank.”

And how does Chris define success? “Achieving the freedom to do what you like to do, how you like to do it, when you want to do it, and then seeing others enjoy and appreciate what you’ve created as a result.” And so it is – just another day on the mountain.

Thank you, David for all you have done for the Nashville Wine Auction!”

ABOUT NORMAN LIPMAN: Norman Lipman is remembered by many as a generous humanitarian and a national leader of the wine and spirits industry.  He was a founder and zealous supporter of l’Eté du Vin, the country’s oldest charity wine auction. Lipman left a legacy of success, and Nashville Wine Auction has raised more than $19 million in support of its charitable beneficiaries and the fight against cancer since 1980.

Though his triumphs are unforgettable, Lipman always identified, celebrated and fostered the achievement of others. The award is presented annually in Lipman’s memory and in recognition of individuals who have embraced the humanitarian qualities of wisdom, courage, optimism, commitment and integrity in their personal and professional lives. To continue his tradition of encouragement, nominators are asked to name a person they feel is especially worthy of recognition for his or her positive personal attributes.

ABOUT THE NORMAN M. LIPMAN AWARD: The public commemoration of the Norman Lipman Award is a specially commissioned sculpture, Man of Love and Wisdom, by Tennessee artist Terry Williams. The twelve-foot, steel sculpture features a figure striding forward to offer assistance with his hand stretched out in compassion.  An owl, the ancient symbol of divine perception and wisdom, rests on his shoulder. It is on permanent loan to Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville where Norman Lipman received treatment and comfort during his final illness. The sculpture is housed in a private atrium where the families of cancer patients can retire for peace and reflection.

Past recipients have included leading figures from the wine and spirits industry, as well as private individuals noted for their love of wine and their respect for those who produce it, such as Robert Mondavi, Marvin L. Sharken, Jim Clendenen and Billy Ray Hearn. Last year’s recipients were Deborah and Keith Pitts. Each recipient of the Norman M. Lipman Award receives a steel replica of the owl from Man of Love and Wisdom, as a unique recognition of his or her achievement.

Champagne Henriot

NEW_LOGO_09:07

It was in 1808, under Apolline Henriot, that Champagne Henriot was officially founded. She was the niece of the very famous Abbé Godinot, an erudite man who contributed to improvements in viticulture and the making of the Champagne wine.
Apolline, an enterprising woman of great character, sold her wines both in France and abroad.

The champagne wines became a huge success with royalty and it was only natural that Champagne Henriot became the favorite firstly at the Dutch court, then in Austria and Hungary with the Hapsburgs.

She passed on her savoir-faire to her grandson, Ernest : a family tradition was born.

In 1875, Ernest enlarged the company’s holdings and developped the House. At the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera crisis reached the Champagne vineyards but Emile Marguet, (father in law to Paul Henriot) was one of the first to reconstitute his vineyards with grafted stock.

From then on and from generation to generation, the House of Henriot has devoted all its talent to creating the most superb wines from grapes carefully selected from the great “terroirs” on the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

Since 1808, Champagne Henriot, one of the last independent and family-owned houses in Champagne, has pursued a tradition of excellence – a fragile balance between delicacy, intensity, and purity. For seven generations, the family has selected only the very best vineyards, concentrated on the purity of chardonnay and has upheld the utmost respect for time in order to ensure the cuvee has an opportunity to reach its full expression.
The emotion of style

A unique elegance, a chiseled style
From the first standards established by Apolline Henriot, who founded the house in 1808, Henriot champagnes have been distinguished by their finesse, exceptional elegance, complexity and striking, brilliant richness

The assemblage

The choices made in blending perpetuate the house style: chardonnay reigns in proportion (fifty to sixty percent). It brings finesse, elegance, richness and freshness. Pinot noir gives essential structure. Pinot meunier contributes fruit complexity. Non vintage wines may contain as many as fifty different crus in precisely orchestrated balance, with roughly twenty percent reserve wines. It is again Champagne Henriot’s task to impart a distinct personality to its wines. These wines, which may be a decade in age and are tasted at least every three months, comprise the house’s library, guaranteeing the perpetuity of its style.

Maturing

The bottles remain for a long maturing period in the calm and dark of Henriot cellars in Reims. In these caves, dug out of the chalk to a depth of 18 metres, the temperature (11°) and hygrometry (98%) are constant. To allow the grape varieties full expression, Champagne Henriot observes maturation periods that are normally twice as long as those required by law. The time necessary for each cuvée to reach its full potential.

Dosage

This is the last touch the cellar master can bring to a cuvee. The dosage is measured (approximately 8g/l) to obtain an optimal balance and maturity of the wines.

Domaine Parent, located in Pommard, in the heart of Côte d’Or, is today run by Anne Parent and her sister Catherine Fages-Parent, representing the 12th generation, and perpetuating a family tradition dating back to the 17th century.
In 1787, Etienne Parent had friendly and professional connections with Thomas Jefferson who was to become the 3rd President of the United States. He then became a forerunner of Burgundy wine exportations across the Atlantic.
At the beginning of 19th century, Claude Parent left Volnay, the family cradle, to settle in Pommard and to build Domaine Parent in 1803.
In 1947, Jacques Parent, then 19 years old, began working with his father Maxime. He then took over the management of the Domaine in 1953, and triggered an innovative impetus. Indeed, Domaine Parent was one of the first estates of Côte d’Or which sold all its production in bottles, in France on the best tables of French gastronomy, and overseas as well.
Jacques Parent’s will to work and ensure the continued existence of this family property allowed him to pass on the family estate calmly to his two daughters Anne and Catherine in 1998.

Anne Parent

Anne Parent was born in 1958, and began her career studying Private Law at Dijon University. She then completed a series of renowned professional trainings in the world of wine:
Master of CFPPA in Beaune (vocational training and agricultural promotion centre) ; Certificate of Expert taster of sensory analysis ; DTO ( Diploma of Technician in Oenology) .
She progressively took over the strategic management of the Domaine together with her sister Catherine, while allowing cultivation practices and wine-making process to develop.
She manages vineyards cultivation methods and wine-making together with wine-ageing. She is also in charge of the team management and the development of big Export accounts.
Anne has a daughter – Alix – who was born in 1989.

Anne Parent holds many responsibilities and got many awards in the winemaking industry:

• Founder of the association Femmes et Vins de Bourgogne (Women and Wines of Burgundy)
• President of the national association called “Femmes de vin” (Women of wine)
• French foreign trade advisor
• Chevalier de l’ordre de la Légion d’honneur
• Chevalier du Tastevin
• Bailli de Pommard
• Member of “les Piliers Chablisiens”
• Honorary member of “la confrérie des Gouts Vin”

Catherine Fages-Parent

Born in 1960, Catherine Fages-Parent has 3 children – Constance, Adélaïde and Louis-Gabriel – and has a long standing experience in the luxury hotel sector.

Catherine has been managing Domaine Parent since 1998 together with her sister Anne.

She is in charge of the Domaine’s participation to the many professional and public trade shows, in France and abroad.

Her responsibilities also extend to team and administrative management, and the commercial follow-up of some big export accounts: Canada, Europe, Asia.

• Bailli de Pommard
• Chevalier du Tastevin

Wineyards management

The vineyards of Domaine Parent are planted on complex soils made of clay and limestone, on marl hills of the Oxfordian age, on dolomitic limestone and red clays, especially on the Pommard appellation, which helps Pinot Noir grape variety expressing its power and elegance.

A constant concern of the Domaine is a careful selection of vine stock and a distribution between old vines (50 years and more) and more recent ones together with the will of maintaining land holdings in good health.

For some years now, vineyards management has been orientated towards a bio-dynamic and organic approach, in the respect of environment and health, to bring out the expression of each terroir in its most authentic and natural way.

Domaine Parent has been certified organic in 2013 (ECOCERT Certification).

Soils and petiole analyses are conducted regularly to moderate organic soils improvers.

Moreover, in order to master our yields, we mainly use Cordon Royat pruning, but we also use Guyot pruning, depending on the needs, the age and the lay of each plot.

No herbicide is used, and our vineyards are plowed moderately.

Wine-Making

We harvest by hand, it is essential and the basis of wine-making of great Burgundy red wines, made from Pinot Noir, the most noble and elegant grape variety.

The beginning of the harvest is indeed an important strategic decision. Sampling and analyses are run, we taste the grapes some weeks before the harvest, and we supervise the sanitary state of our vineyards, which enables us to determine the first day of the harvest.

The grapes are first picked out in the vineyards, and then rigorously sorted out twice: first on a vibrating table, and secondly on a classical sorting table, with 6 to 8 workers to select the best grapes.

After a total stalking of the grapes, the berries are delicately lead to the vats, to avoid any crushing. Alcoholic fermentation begins thanks to natural yeasts, after a few days of cold maceration.

It lasts 10 to 21 days, depending on the appellations and vintages, with a strict supervision of temperatures: between 29 and 32 °C.

During this period, some pumping over and punching of the cap allow a sweet extraction, favoring the balance between power, finesse and elegance, between fruits and tannins, and overall respecting each terroir’s personality or “climat”.

After the pressing, wines are put into oak barrels by gravity in our bicentennial cellars.

Pairings Revised Cover2

Nashville Wine Auction is pleased to announce that Pairings: The Ultimate Wine and Food Weekend, held from February 25-27, 2016, raised over $340,000 to fulfill the organization’s mission to fund the fight against cancer in Middle Tennessee. The amount raised this year represents a $70,000 increase from 2015 and a $175,000 increase from 2013’s inaugural event. Pairings was co-chaired by Jodi Pfaff Gillman and Mark Gillman and Kristen and Brian Junghans.

As one of Nashville’s premier wine and food events, the attendance at Pairings increased from 660 guests in 2015 to 802 guests in 2016 – a 22% increase. Over four years, attendance at Pairings has increased 325%.

Pairings: The Ultimate Wine and Food Weekend kicked off on Thursday, February 25 with 17 Private Vintner Dinners, chaired by Melanie Cansler, in restaurants and private homes throughout Nashville. These intimate dinners, which ranged from 10 to 24 guests, allowed guests to meet winemakers and winery owners and taste their wines with food pairings from many of Nashville’s best chefs. “Being able to build relationships between wine enthusiasts in our community, West Coast wineries, and the fantastic creative culinary talent in Nashville, has been an important step in the development of Pairings,” said Holly Whaley, President/CEO of Nashville Wine Auction. “We are working hard to create the ultimate pairing – enjoyment of wine and generous giving to fund the fight against cancer.”

On Friday, February 26, Wined Up! – Nashville’s Ultimate Wine Tasting – brought together over 27 quality winemakers, 9 chefs and 125 wine-centric Silent Auction lots for one exciting night. “We refer to Wined Up! as your insider’s guide to wine country,” notes Whaley. “There are very few tastings where you get to meet the winemaker or winery owner. At Wined Up! guests were able to go to the Cakebread Cellars table and see Dennis Cakebread, or taste the wines of Bougetz Cellars with Joan and Thomas Bougetz or have a conversation with Korbin Ming of Korbin Kameron Winery.” In addition to tasting rare and limited offerings from many wineries, guests were able to enjoy the cuisine of Nashville’s MStreet Restaurants as well as appetizers from visiting chefs from Austin, which paired beautifully with the wines being poured.

The culmination of Pairings was held on Saturday, February 27 at The Rosewall, where three Nashville chefs and three Austin chefs came together to host a spectacular six course meal, paired with California wines. All chefs received a bottle of wine for their course and created a delicious menu to perfectly pair their cuisine with the wines. The menu for the night was as follows:

GAJA

Few wineries evoke excellence and artistry the way the Gaja (GUY-yah) family name does. To utter these two simple syllables is to call forth one of the greatest and most venerated traditions in European winemaking. To mention this family and its wines is to summon an icon and touchstone of Italian viticulture.

The GAJA legacy began in 1859 and is now in its fifth generation as a family-owned winery. With each generation, GAJA has reshaped and redefined the vocabulary of Italian winemaking and the world’s perception of Italian wine.

GAJA was among the earliest independent bottlers of fine wine in Italy. In the second half of the 19th century, a time when most Italian wine was bottled and sold by large estates and cooperatives, the family bottled its own wines from locally grown grapes to serve at the restaurant it ran in the hilltop village of Barbaresco. From its earliest days, GAJA pursued quality over quantity through practices like careful fruit selection and a focus on handcrafted wine.

In the 1960s, the Gaja family looked to expand its land holdings and began to acquire vineyards in some of the top growing sites surrounding Barbaresco. This part of Piedmont, along with the neighboring Barolo zone, is the heart of the Langhe hills, a place that combines the best aspects of Italian and French wine culture, and it was during the tenure of the founder’s grandson and great-grandson that the GAJA winery began to seriously promote their home region of Barbaresco as one of the world’s great appellations.

While generations of wine lovers around the world have reveled in the Gaja family’s contribution to the renown of Barbaresco, within the family itself a place of honor is reserved for their beloved matriarch, Clotilde Rey (grandmother to Angelo Gaja), the second-generation of Gaja to lead the winery into the 20th century.

Two wines have been named for her: Sorì Tildìn, the second wine to be bottled as a vineyard-designated Barbaresco (1970), which refers to Clotilde Rey’s nickname, Tildìn; and Gaia & Rey, the winery’s groundbreaking Chardonnay, named for Angelo Gaja’s daughter, Gaia Gaja (born in 1979, the same year Chardonnay was first planted by GAJA) and Rey, Clotilde’s maiden name.

More recently, as the 21st century dawned on a globe ever thirsty for fine wine, GAJA again challenged the conventions of Italian wine and reclassified its renowned single-vineyard bottlings. Reviving an old Piedmontese winemaking tradition, GAJA began in 1996 to blend small amounts of Barbera with Nebbiolo for its crus Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi, Conteisa and Sperss—wines consistently ranked among the world’s finest. By choosing to remove “Barbaresco” and “Barolo” from their labels with the 2000 vintage, and instead turning attention to the specific vineyard sites behind each bottle, GAJA redefined the notion of greatness in Piedmontese winemaking.

Today, GAJA maintains a commitment to innovation and experimentation—in areas like vineyard management and clonal selection, in particular—providing continuing proof that behind the family’s legacy is a restless drive for the absolute best in quality.

gaia-gaja

GUEST OF HONOR, GAIA GAJA

After completing a degree in economics at the University of Pavia, Gaia Gaja spent two years in the wine industry in San Francisco before returning to Italy to begin working with her father. She remembers fondly how a bottle of GAJA 1989 Barbaresco, shared with her by her parents’ friends in San Francisco, inspired her to return home to Italy and accept her father’s offer of a position with the winery. Today, she is involved in every aspect of her family’s business, and she very clearly shares in her father’s energy and charisma. When not shuttling between the family’s properties in Piedmont and Tuscany (Montalcino and Bolgheri), she travels abroad, serving as the winery’s top ambassador in the United States, where the gentle Northern Californian cadence of her English only adds to her already contagious charm. The winery’s Gaia & Rey, first released in 1983, is named after Gaia and her great-grandmother, Clotilde Rey, the great matriarch often cited as the anchor in the truly epic story of this family of winemakers.
